The Art of Embroidery: Getting Started

Hello and welcome to my blog!

I've created this blog to document my journey as I learn the art of embroidery. Over the next month or so, I will be posting updates on the progress of my embroidery skills and the project I plan to create, which is a 8" x 8" hoop with the flowers and the text,"love you, love you more, love you the most" to give to my mother as a gift.

I've chosen embroidery because it seems both peaceful and challenging. I've always wanted to get into the craft, but have been preoccupied with sewing for the last five years. As part of my Master's degree, I have decided to take a course that focuses on the integration of technology in education. As part of the course, I have been asked to learn to "make something" by drawing exclusively on digital networks - - YouTube, social media, online forums, and tutorials. In this first post, I'd like to share my "launching point," or what I have learned is essential to get started with my embroidery project.

The Art of Embroidery: Getting Started

To begin, I started with a google search, "how to do embroidery," and eventually stumbled on a fabulous webpage called Sublime Stitching. Here, I found hand embroidery tutorials, such as the basic tools needed to try out embroidery. Having read that I need a hoop, floss, an embroidery needle, fabric, and scissors, I checked out my local fabric and embroidery shop Fabrications to see if they had what I needed to get started (they did!).

Let's recap with a picture. As you can see, I have:
  • one wooden embroidery hoop (top left)
  • one magnet to catch/hold my embroidery needle (top right)
  • ten different embroidery floss colours (bottom left)
  • one fat quarter of cotton fabric (top right)
  • one embroidery needle (top right)
While I waited for my supplies to arrive, I thought I would post on the Fabrications Sewcial Group to see if anyone could offer advice about useful websites, YouTube tutorials/channels, and so on to help me to get started with embroidery. Check out a few of their initial responses!

Once my supplies arrived, I was able to practice some of the basic stitches that Sublime Stitching posted on their tutorial. I had a bit of a hard time processing the information (I am a visual learner), so I searched "basic embroidery stitches" on YouTube and found this useful video by Kin Community - - which also gives a simple breakdown of how to get started with your embroidery project (super useful!).

Check out this quick video to see my progress so far.
